Champions IGA Long Gully first Supermarket to go Green

Following the great results achieved at their Heathcote supermarket, Champions IGA have decided to progressively roll out their "green" policy across other stores in Central Victoria, Melbourne and Western Australia.

The environment is not the only beneficiary of the Champions Green policy as the levy paid on plastic bags is donated to the local hospital. Heathcote Champions IGA launched their plastic bag levy in September after giving away green bags for the month of August. Since then they have raised over $800 from the sale of the plastic bags and on 7th November a cheque for $837.77 was presented to Jeff Scoble the CEO of the Heathcote District Hospital.

Mr. Brendon Goddard Managing Director said that "The reaction from our customers has been very supportive. They like what we are doing even if they do pay a premium to use plastic bags."

Long Gully Champions IGA will be launching their Green policy on the 17th of November. Green bags will be given away for free (with every $30 spent) for two weeks and after this time plastic bags will be charged at 5c each. All money received for plastic bags will be donated to the Bendigo Hospital.

Gloria Turner Fund Raising Manager of Bendigo Health said "We are very pleased to receive this support from Champions, especially when it comes as a result of a positive step for the environment".
